Christian Kaspar Schwarm receives the ART COLOGNE Prize 2019

Founder of Independent Collectors, Berlin

Early last month, Christian Kaspar Schwarm received the thrilling news that he is to be the recipient of the ART COLOGNE Prize 2019, as founder of Independent CollectorsBMW Group has a special connection to Schwarm, as the exclusive partner of his project since 2009.

The ART COLOGNE Prize is awarded each year for an engagement with art mediation and publicly promoting and sharing personal perspectives on contemporary art. This year's ceremony will take place on April 11 in Cologne's historic Town Hall, awarded by the Koelnmesse and the BVDG (Bundesverband Deutscher Galerien und Kunsthändler / German association of galleries and art dealers). Photographer, collector and curator Wilhelm Schürmann, will give the laudatory speech for Christian Kaspar Schwarm.

"Christian Kaspar Schwarm is an original, curious, intellectually flexible, and politically interested collector – with a social conscience." - BVDG

Christian Kaspar Schwarm founded Independent Collectors in 2008 as an international community for collectors of contemporary art, to exchange discourse, information and experiences, following a personal curiosity and hunger for just that. It was also Wilhelm Schürmann who very much gave his support to Schwarm to pursue his bold idea. Manifested today as an online public platform, Independent Collectors has become a comprehensive resource of the present and past happenings of private collections through presenting online exhibitions and interviews

Additoinal to the platform, The BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors, is a pocket sized initiative which was first released in 2012 as a publication and resource, which would radically increase viewership to privately owned art. Now already in its fifth edition, the current guide showcases 270 private collections across 196 cities in 45 countries which are open for public access.

In the spirit of public communication, Christian Kaspar Schwarm mentioned: "I feel honoured to receive the 'ART COLOGNE Preis' for 2019 – Germany's most relevant award for “Kunstvermittlung”. After having started INDEPENDENT COLLECTORS in 2008, this is a wonderful affirmation of what our team has achieved in initiating and running this digital platform. The team includes all former and current colleagues, to whom I give my deepest thanks. My gratitude also goes to our global partner, BMW Group - their support undeniably attributes to where we are today. Loud praise also goes to the thousands of collectors who have always been with us and who have made it possible that IC exists as the largest non-commercial archive of private collection activities worldwide. See you in Cologne!!"
